ash kept the George Will column but decided not to bother providing a link to it, since the relevant content is incorporated in her rebuttal. And anyway, he’s such a drag she barely skims his articles anymore.

Who knew? After all these years of considering myself a liberal, with the credentials to prove it, according to George “Hence” Will I may actually be a closet conservative.

That’s because I happen to agree with him that well-behaved children in public and proper punctuation as a component of effective communication are essential to a civilized society, a value Mr. Will assigns to the exclusive domain of those on the right.  In fact, I could take Mr. Will’s contention and raise him one: bad grammar is downright illiterate.

Or could it be that the normally astute Mr. Will has a blind spot? Could it be that his mindset is so skewed to one side of the political continuum that he is incapable of describing the other but as a caricature, lacking sufficient insight into what “anything-goes, entitlement-based” liberals actually think, feel, believe, or consider important, if indeed any such consensus exists?

Could it be that by frivolously suggesting that those of us on the left favor – or merely dismiss as insignificant - unruly children and the lazy or ignorant abuse of apostrophes, Mr. Will has gratuitously injected politics into an apolitical issue?  All I know is a brilliant mind is a terrible thing to waste on foolish assertions.
