My favorite cliché, after “Love it or leave it,” is “Get over it.”
In his letter of July 28, Mr. Richard “Stoney” Stone refers to a “crying” Al Gore. I’m not sure when Mr. Gore cried, at least publically, though I did watch his entire speech at the Democratic convention, during which he joked about growing up to win the popular vote and dreamlike visions of counting and recounting votes.
Maybe to Mr. Stone this constitutes crying. At any rate, on the opposite page of the editorials, a Mr. Robert Lynch cries about– excuse me, laments – the Chicago liberal establishment candidate Barack Obama about to force his agenda on a complacent Illinois citizenry, who should not come “crying” to we-warned-you Republicans when it’s too late.
Republicans don’t cry, or so I’m told. Thus, as George Bush, whom the Supreme Court could appoint President but couldn’t make smart, atrophies credibility, they keep a stiff upper lip. When Obama – opponent or no opponent – becomes Senator, they will likewise not shed a tear.
And when this brilliant, dynamic, inspiring young man becomes our first black President, in eight or twelve years, I’m sure they will “get over” that as well. Meanwhile, for the first time in my life, I’m actually thrilled to live in Illinois, where I get to vote for him.
