Here’s a letter to Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter during the 06 Lamont challenge to Connecticut Senator Lieberman. Though Alter is an avowed liberal, that status is trumped by an insider/outsider configuration in which, as a fellow establishment figure, Alter felt compelled to support the unsupportable. Which may be the nice way of explaining his faulty judgment.
Man, when you’re wrong, you’re wrong.
In the interest of the many other messages you shall be receiving, I’ll focus on just 3 ways:
- you’re wrong that this election in any shape or form equates to that of Nixon. Nixon ran for president. Lieberman is running for Senator. That’s 1/100th of the power, not to mention if he does lose, another Democrat will fill his slot
- you’re wrong that anger against Lieberman is proxy anger at Bush. As if there weren’t plenty enough to go around, Lieberman’s offenses against liberalism are entirely his own.
- you’re wrong that Monica – arguably or otherwise – handed Bush the victory in 2000. Journalists did that. If you’re unfamiliar with Bob Somerby’s website “The Daily Howler” I suggest you steer clear of it now. It makes a damning case against the insider pundits (that would include you) to which no online forum such as DKos (of course, it didn’t even exist at the time) can compare.
Your bias is showing. So, I’m afraid, is your fear. Just how threatened into denial will you and your cohorts descend before you are forced to acknowledge that your insight and wisdom no longer trump ours?
