According to the logic of Ms. (pardon the term) Brockelsby, the degeneracy of homosexuality and moral delinquency of homosexuals themselves disqualify them from the sanctity of marriage, society’s most treasured institution. Yet also according to Brockelsby, most if not all of society’s ills directly descend from the instability of family life outside the realm of traditional marriage. Since many children are raised by homosexual couples, Brockelsby might be prompted to argue their welfare depends on allowing their parents to marry, not precisely the opposite.
Is there a Catch 22 here? It appears Brockelsby advocates penalizing the allegedly disadvantaged children of marriageless families, or at least maintaining the status quo. Since that position makes no sense, I suspect Brockelsby’s true agenda is to further stigmatize a minority whose sins are the province of the real Constitution – the Christian Bible. As for her statistics, no doubt it never has occurred to her that gay people may be more at risk, medically and psychologically, as a result of marginalization, not debauchery or inherent evil.
Brockelsby represents a group with “Concerned” in its title; she has no exclusive domain over it. I, too, am concerned. I am concerned that so many years after women’s rights and civil rights gay people still struggle for an even playing field in domestic affairs, housing, and employment. I am concerned that narrow-minded, alarmist bigotry is a far greater blight on society than whatever it is Brockelsby loathes and fears. I am concerned that to her, and to too many like her, institutions themselves are more important than those who comprise them. Just like the flag is but a symbol of a country, marriage only designates the relationship between the couple who enter it.
What I am not concerned about is that the Sanctity of Marriage Amendment will pass. It won’t. On the contrary, gay marriage will eventually prevail, and will become no more scandalous – or threatening -than a lunch counter serving people of diverse races.
Don’t worry, Ms Brockelsby. If civilization should crumble, it won’t be because of homosexual unions.
