LETTER TO THE EDITOR                SUN  10  24  04

Channel 20 is to Sinclair as the SJ-R is to Copley

Confronted with the headline “Bush worthy of reelection,” I knew I had two options.  I could be angry or I could be amused.  Very, very amused.

Early into the article, I came upon this little gem:  “When al-Qaida terrorists struck, the president went on the offensive in aggressive fashion.  He perceived immediately…”  This would be the same president, I presume, who, warned of an imminent domestic attack via the infamous August 6, 2001 memo, continued to vacation on his Texas ranch.  The same president who, having been notified an attack had indeed occurred, froze for fully seven minutes to digest the information before he could begin to act upon it.

That’s downright hysterical.

Readers can be certain this editorial was not a local production, but dispatched from headquarters of the parent organization.  Seems TV Channel 20 is to Sinclair as The State Journal-Register is to the Copley press: held hostage.

Thanks for my laugh of the day.

Note to MM:  I don’t envy the avalanche of responses awaiting you.  Sorry to have contributed to it.

Endorsement forgets economy, health care

Regarding The State Journal-Register's decision on editorial opinion to endorse President Bush for re-election, I am surprised and disappointed. Perhaps to provide a fair balance, you should have put the picture and article buried on the obituary page paying tribute to more than 1,100 fallen soldiers in a useless war. Your opinion did not mention national economy, health issues and the Medicare crises.

The article on Page 11 showing that polls in Illinois favor Kerry is the real indicator of how the voters feel, regardless of your editorial opinion.

As a senior, I am frustrated at having to pay for vital items such as food and gas at three times the cost it was four years ago. To see the wealthiest and the corporations get more tax breaks is just not showing the compassion the Bush administration speaks about.

To read that the social security increase for 2005 is $25 monthly and the increase in Medicare half that is my indicator of who really cares.

I urge all to get out and vote and show your preference.

Bush-backing editorial a piece of propaganda

I resent The State Journal-Register endorsing President Bush. I found your piece on Sunday to be full of propaganda. Not only is WICS selling out to the Republican Party, but so are you.

You take on the war (that we shouldn't be sending our military to fight for in the first place) and boldly state that "Kerry would have retreated from the use of force in the face of U.N. reticence." The only thing that I can predict that Kerry would have done is to not lie about why we should be there!

Time and time again, Bush has been caught in lie after lie. Bush has only looked to make more money for the select few. The State Journal-Register would be one of those few as would Sinclair.

President Bush not worthy of re-election

I must strongly disagree with your endorsement of President Bush, especially on the basis of his foreign policy. Yes, he is decisive and he stands his ground, no matter how dead wrong it is. That is not strong, that is foolish.

John Kerry and the United Nations expected the president to do what he said he would do, and wait for the weapons inspectors to finish their work in Iraq. Had the president done this, our troops would be alive and unharmed, as well as the tens of thousands of Iraqis now killed or maimed. Bush instead rushed into a war with a country that posed no eminent threat to the United States. John Kerry withdrew his support of the president because of this tremendous and unconscionable mistake. That is not vacillating. That is showing the president his rash actions have consequences. By other countries withdrawing their support, the same important point is made.

Condoleezza Rice said earlier in Bush's term, that Saddam Hussein was contained and no longer a threat. Had Bush not vacillated on this policy, we would have the troops available to deal with the eminent threats made by North Korea, Iran and Pakistan, supposedly our ally. Of course, these threats were foreseeable if the president had listened to advisers like the ones that have left his administration in protest.

For anyone to endorse this president is an outrage. George W. Bush should be impeached and run from office, not re-elected.

Think long and hard before casting vote

Linda Bradley of Thayer wrote a letter published Saturday that should be required reading for everyone before they go to the polls Nov. 2.

In it she outlines the questions that we should all ask ourselves before making a decision that will affect not only the next four years but may determine the rest of eternity. And her last line, "And Bill Clinton was impeached by a blue dress?" is right on! Sounds pretty tame to me.

Please think long and hard about the last four years and the mistakes that have been made before casting your ballot.
