Quite frankly, ash has no use for the local columnist whose essay appears below, and who used to write for a religious publication, to whatever extent that continues to influence him. He was also the author of a piece she wrote to disdain some months earlier, which Mike the editor was only too willing to publish. Think she might have been speaking for him?  So she considered it anything but remarkable when, after a month of “not for publication” letters being duly abided, her denunciation of the same colleague of Mike’s was waved right through. Note how she disputes his points then raises the stakes, one of her favorite rhetorical techniques:

Two words in the English language have done as much to divide Americans as have hundreds of other words we hurl at each other. The words are "liberal" and "conservative."

These two labels have passed their expiration date

ash’s cyber friend she suspects never quite understood the issues culminating in ash canceling her subscription to her local paper. When Mike, the editor, published “Musical Hot Seat” (authored by “name withheld” referred to in the copy) on the first day of the month after their dispute prompting a moratorium (which, as far as she was concerned, represented quite a statement of reinstitution), ash expected her friend to comment on the fact and misrepresent the occasion as the end of a recovery period. Of course, that would have been inaccurate. ash had thrown no tantrum to recover from nor did she intend to resume contributing letters she would soon no longer be able to read.

After Mike the editor published “Musical Hot Seat” ash decided to have some fun with the situation by calculating how many letters she had sent him NOT marked “not for publication,” adding that number to the ones that were, and labeling the next one accordingly, as if there had been no skip in the sequence. Also, rather than quote from an article in her local paper, she made one of her references to an article appearing in another publication to test his power of observation.

Remember the “Poison Pill” series? Here’s another letter ash submitted to her local editor long after the relationship went belly up resulting in virtually no chance of being published again. It reflects on a contemporary story which somehow wasn’t reported – as if it never happened:

If an event occurs and the State Journal-Register doesn’t cover it, was there a newsworthy story?
