On the home front, [Charles] Fishman argues that critics are wrong when they say that Wal-Mart puts little people out of business. We (consumers) put little people out of business, he says. We vote with our wallets, and we’re the ones who choose Wal-Mart over local stores. Wal-Mart, in that sense, is the ultimate model of democracy.

as ash has been saying forever, she’s in it for the analysis of human behavior, not the issues per se. This one was obvious to anyone paying attention:



Tuesday’s newspaper featured a poignant photo of an 11-year-old boy receiving the Medal of Honor from President Bush on the second anniversary of his father’s selfless sacrifice near the Baghdad Airport.

On the occasion of the debut of mega website Huffington Post (nickname HuffPo), ash was forced to admit she was no longer as fond of its mistress of ceremonies, Arianna Huffington, while she continues to admire the Greek native’s ability to speak and write English more eloquently than most native English speakers. Also, it should be noted, Huffington belongs to that rare breed of converts from one political persuasion to another, and she took the correct direction on that continuum as far as ash is concerned.

The best essays write themselves. ash likes the flow of this one, which patiently explains a concept to someone who no doubt doesn’t want to know:



My dear sister in another time zone advises against responding to arguments whose merits are non-existent.  Her rule of thumb is to let the foolishness speak for itself; to refute it would be simply too easy.
