ash almost forgot that her current feud with Mike, the editor of her local paper, wasn’t the first one she had with that publication. The earlier one – though fundamentally but another testament to her liberal roots – wasn’t personal. Rather, she objected to the fact that the SJ-R declined to publish same-gender dating ads. Imagine that. Only in a throwback community, even in 1999, when this played out, would that be controversial.

“Bill” is Bill Press, professional progressive prognosticator and radio talk show host. (Also a self-proclaimed “insider,” as if that were an attribute – then or especially now). ash remembers that much. But she doesn’t remember his specific comments, let alone the forum, praising ex-Governor George Ryan as a hero for suspending executions in his state as he prepared to leave office. ash happens to agree with the death penalty; if she didn’t she would still be fully cognizant of the most cynical tactic of distraction imaginable.

Bill, you’re wrong, and I’m no conservative, so let’s get that out of the way. I do live in Springfield, Illinois and I do know of what I speak.

Apparently (ash says “apparently” because it was too long ago to recall precisely) ash was motivated by another writer’s observations to contribute her own. What she does know for sure is that this piece, submitted to her paper as a guest editorial, somehow never saw the light of day.  Maybe the fact that she took rather unsubtle shots at management had something to do with it.

As usual, I download Coulter’s column moments after she posts it on her website Wednesday night.  Don’t ask me why I bother, since the same column appears in our Friday paper.  OK, do ask me. I’m getting her over with.  She’s the bad accident I can’t ignore but need to dispense with and move on to something more pleasant and less surreal. Then, if I’m lucky, Ted Rall (as late as Coulter is punctual) will have posted and I can read his column, always guaranteed to nullify Coulter’s nonsense.  Or Arianna Huffington, not carried in our paper, my runaway favorite. (More about her later.)

This was fun. It reminds ash of chess, which she has managed to learn – and forget from lack of practice – several times. You close in one someone; he hides behind other players; you corner him and he has no choice but to surrender. That, or become mum.

In his recent column, [name withheld] refers several times to "Bush-haters" as a monolithic group who, if not contemptuous of the president for the sake of contempt, blame him for massive job losses under his watch which, according to Gaston, are absolutely not of his making.
